The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers’ Mart P.L.C. held their Annual Sale of Breeding Ewes and Shearlings at Longtown on Wednesday 12th September 2007, when their was forward 4,057 head (including 1,902 shearlings and 40 rams).

Buyers were present from as far a field as Suffolk in the south to Thurso in the north. Older correct ewes met a very firm trade and were easy to sell to a top of £57 for Texel crosses from Upper Glendivan, others to £54 Becklees; Lleyn £48.50 Stackbraes, £44 Broomhouse; Zwartbles cross £48 Becklees; Greyface £48.50 Hallburn, £45.50 Chapel (Hutchison), £45 Ladyhousesteads, £44.50 Broomhills (Hird); Cheviot Mule £45 Chapel; Half Bred £44 Maxton. Greyface two shears to £60 Fieldside.

Included in the sale was a flock of 450 North of England Mule ewes from Messrs Robinson-Wyllie, Culbae, Newton Stewart. This very good stock of sheep were very easy to sell with shearlings to £66, 2 crop to £64, 3 crop to £56 and 4 crop to £47.50. Suffolk cross 4 crops to £56.

Shearlings were a more hesitant trade with averages down £8 on the year. Top of £130 for Texel crosses from Crumhaugh Hill; Greyface £83 Sceughdyke, £80 Hole of Lyne; Cheviot Mule £68 Whitton; Bleu d’Maine £66 Ormiston Lodge; Suffolk cross £65 Hillhead; Beltex cross £62 Hillhead.
Rams to £225 for a Texel shearling from Cleughfoot; Charollais £150 Lesson Hall.
