The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers' Mart Limited was founded in 1926 by a group of local farmers. Since that time, the principal activity of the company has been selling livestock, mainly cattle and sheep.

In 1981 the company was reregistered to become a Public Limited Company.

Sales of livestock have been built up over the years and Longtown Mart is now the largest centre in the country for sales of sheep.

Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers’ Mart P.L.C. took over the livestock auctioneering business of Thomson, Roddick & Laurie Ltd., at Dumfries and Thornhill Marts, as from 15th January 2001. This business is being run alongside the Longtown business.
