LONGTOWN SHOW & SALE OF RAMS & FEMALES


The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. held their annual sale of registered and un-registered Texel rams & females, sponsored by Wallace Oils, on Wednesday 21st September 2005, along with their second sale of accredited and non accredited 44 Zwartbles sheep. Also forward was a catalogue entry of 111 Suffolk and other Continental rams.

The Texel ring saw buyers selective in their purchases with only the best quality sheep easily sold, other sheep proved very hard to cash.

In the show for registered Texels held prior to the sale, the judge Mr Jim Frame, Little Gala, Wiston awarded the championship to a Texel ram lamb from Messrs Currie, Carlinside, Lanark which later realised £600 and was purchased by Messrs Kerr, Middleton Farm, Newton Mearns. The prize list was as follows:-

Registered shearlings:– 1st and Reserve Champion – Haltcliffe, £200 to D’Mainholm.
2nd – Castlehill, £400 to Crumhaugh Hill.
3rd – Beechcroft, £320 to Muirhead.

Registered ram lambs:- 1st and Champion – Carlinside, £600 to Middleton.
2nd – Chesterhall Parks (unsold).
3rd – Haltcliffe, £200 to Bankhead.

Other leading prices:-

Shearlings - £320, £300 (x2) Haltcliffe, £300 (x2) Castlehill, £300 (x2) Baltier, £281, £260 Sandilands.

Lambs - £180 Baltier, £160 Haltcliffe.

The unregistered show saw the Championship awarded to a Texel shearling ram from Messrs Aitken, Kerfield, Peebles, with the reserve going to a Texel shearling from J. Graham, Lawshall. The prize list was as follows:-

Unregistered shearlings:- 1st and Champion – Kerfield, £260 to Braeshaw.
2nd and Reserve – Lawshall, £380 to Harelawhill.
3rd – Rulewater, £250 to Rockcliffe.
Unregistered ram lambs:- 1st– Peela Hill, £150 to Rockcliffe.
2nd– Raggetsyke, £120 to Martindale.
3rd – Raggetsyke (unsold).

Other leading prices:-

Shearlings - £260 Catslackburn, £250 (x3) Rulewater Parks, £250 (x2) Catslackburn.

Leading flock averages:- Baltier (2) – top £300, average £300.
Castlehill (10) – top £400, average £260.
Sandilands (3) – top £280, average £253.
Catslackburn (3) - £260, average £253.
Haltcliffe (9) – top £320, average £251.
Rulewater Parks (3) – top £250, average £250.
Lawshall (5) - £380, average £238.

Texel gimmers to:- £140 East Middle.
Texel ewe lambs to:- £80 (x3) Dashwellgreen.

44 Zwartbles sheep were forward and females were again a flying trade, peaking at £300 for a group A ewe lamb from Mrs J. Millar, Woodhousehill, Kirkpatrick Fleming, others from the same home sold to £290 and £250. Other ewe lambs from Broadway Orchard, Herts peaked at £200 and £180, Troutbeck, Carlisle to £190 and £140, Low Lonning, Hallbankgate £100. Rams sold to £160 for a shearling from East Middles, with two shears to £140 from Ropebarn, Blanchland.

Included was the first special sale of Beltex and Beltex cross rams which peaked at £500 for a shearling from Drumrash.
