LONGTOWN MULE EWE LAMBS


The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart held their annual show and sale of Greyface (mule) ewe lambs together with 2nd sale of Cheviot Mule and Continental ewe lambs on Tuesday 13th September 2005 when there was an entry of 6,478.

Another outstanding show of Greyface ewe lambs were a great credit to the vendors. Buyers were present from Thurso in the North to Cornwall in the South. Trade was buoyant throughout with all classes in demand with the average being down £3.40 on the year.

1st prize pen (ex Swaledale) from W.M. & C. Wallace which sold at £75.
Midtodhills
2nd prize (ex Swaledale) from Messrs J.T. James, Midtodhills sold at £80.
Peela Hill
Champion pen of Mule Ewe Lambs (and 1st prize ex Blackface) from A. Carruthers & Sons, Peela Hill sold at £85.
Allensgreen
2nd prize (ex Blackface) from G.D. Walton & Co., Allensgreen sold at £74.

Judging was in the capable hands of Mr & Mrs R. Williams from Hereford whose awarded the following:-
Champion pen ex Blackface ewe from A Carruthers & Sons, Peelo Hill, Bewcastle sold at £85.
Reservce pen ex Swaledale ewe from Messrs Wallace, Gapshield, Gilsland sold at £75.
2nd prize ex Blackface ewe Messrs Walton, Allensgreen, Bardon Mill sold at £74.
3rd prize ex Blackface ewe Wanwood Partners, Wanwood Hill, Alston sold at £69.
2nd prize ex Swaledale ewe J T James, Midtodhills, Roadhead sold at £80.
3rd prize ex Swaledale ewe Messrs Roddam, Fordlands, Hethersgill sold at £69.

Top averages were Allensgreen at £69.66, Old Post Office £64.30, Peelo Hill £64.17, Lane Head £64.

Other top prices were £76 Peelo Hill, £75 Old Post Office, £72 Blacksmiths Cottage, £70 Hole of Lyne, The Row and Midtodhills, £68 Bailey Mill, Harsondale and Wanwood Hill.

The Cheviot Mules were a very good show for quality, trade was steady with most of the sheep sold going South. Top was £54 for a pen from Barnglies, others to £50 Corriehills, £47 West Nubbock & Crawthat, £46 Arkelton.

Kerry ewe lambs to £41 Hillcroft, Texels to £40 Barns (Spruce). Beltex to £40 Chapel. Lleyns to £34 Windyknowe.
