Annual Ewe Lamb Sale


The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward a catalogue entry of 5,927 head of mainly North of England Mule Ewe Lambs at their Annual Ewe Lamb Sale, together with the Second Sale of Cheviot Mule and other breed Ewe Lambs on Tuesday 14th September 2004.

Buyers were present from all over the U.K., Aberdeen down to Cornwall, for an outstanding show for quality. Mule ewe lambs were a credit to the vendors, with many noted annual consignments forward finding a fast selling trade to average £60.12 overall.

Tupping lambs sold between £70 and £80, with runners £50 to £60.

Top price of £100 paid for the champion pen from G.D. Walton & Co., Allensgreen, Bardon Mill, Hexham, who were presented with The Jacob Thomlinson Memorial Rose Bowl, and sold to the judge Mr James Fry, Porterstown, Keir, Thornhill, Dumfries.

Next best prices were £96 & £92 Midtodhills, £84 Peela Hill, £83 Hole of Lyne, £81 Blacksmiths Cottage and £80 Fordlands.

Top flock averages were Allensgreen £72.30; Wanwood Hill £68.73; Peela Hill £67.78; Rotherhope £66.93; Blacksmiths Cottage £65.16; Hole of Lyne £64.

Prior to the sale a show kindly sponsored by the Skelton Horticultural & Agricultural Show Society was capably judged by Mr James Fry, Porterstown, Keir, Thornhill, whose awards were as follows:-

1st prize – Messrs J.T. James, Midtodhills - £96
2nd prize – Messr Roddan, Fordlands, Hethersgill - £80
3rd prize – W.M. & C. Wallace, Gapshield - £78

The second sale of 801 Cheviot Mule ewe lambs again attracted many prospective buyers, all classes enjoyed another outstanding demand. Top of £70, £66 and £63 G. & W. Halliday, Crawthat, Waterbeck others £66 and £65 Barnglies, £64 Embley. The overall average was £57.79.

Half Bred ewe lambs sold to £64 for a pen from T.V. Blair & Son, Dodgsonstown, Roadhead.

Texel cross ewe lambs sold to £47 Glendearg and to £45 Fairfield who also sold Leicesters at £60.
