Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. held their
Annual Sale of Lowland Breeding Ewes & Shearlings at Longtown
on Wednesday 1st September 2004, when an entry
of 3,265 ewes & shearlings
and 10 rams were forward.
A large company of buyers were very eager for all classes of well
bred sheep, with the 1,166 Mule shearlings averaging £82.40,
a rise of over £4 on the year.
Character lots were in tremendous
bloom peaking at £96 for 5 pens in a row from T. Armstrong & Sons,
Sceughdyke, Calthwaite and averaging £94.50. Cheviot Mules
to £80 Auchleuchrie; Texel cross £82 Portospittal; Bleu
d’Maine £62 Orchard House; Suffolk cross £74 Hillcourt
House; Lleyn £70 Guards.
Ewes of all classes were again in strong demand with a top of £88
for 3 shear Zwartble’s from Derwent House. Two shear Mules
met a flyer, peaking at £80 from Parcelstown, others to £66
Dashwellgreen. Three shear Mules to £60 Calvo, with 4 shears
to £45 Maxton House. Two and three shear Texel ewes to £56
Howden.
Rams sold to a top of £300 (twice) for Beltex x Texel shearlings
from B.K. Ryker, Newton Farm, who also sold two Beltex x South Country
Cheviot shearlings at £200 each. Texel shearlings to £180
and £150 Blackhamilton.
