RAM FAIR SALE REPORT

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. held their Autumn Ram Fair on Tuesday 7th October 2003, when there was 678 rams and females of all classes forward.

The annual show and sale of Bluefaced Leicester Rams & Females saw an excellent show of sheep forward. A packed ring of buyers were present with trade very dear prices were double what they were last year. Mr A.R. Carruther, Peela Hill took the honours selling two good shearling rams at the joint top price of £2000, purchasers being Messrs Forster, The Nook, Penton and Messrs Story, Crindledykes, Bardon Mill (best shearling average £1086.66). Two shear rams to £360 The Flatt and £350 Snowden Close, three/four shear £260 The Side. Ram lambs to £420 Bush on Lyne and £360 from Baggarah (who had the top average of £265), £340 Drumrash Farm Partnership.

Two shear ewes to £110 Wylliebrae, shearling ewes £190, £180 Wylliebrae and £155 Allensgreen, ewe lambs £150 Sunnyside.

Prior to the sale judging was efficiently carried out by Mr M. Wood, Brockholes, Bardon Mill, Hexham who awarded the overall championship to Messrs R.C. & W.M. Brough, Bush on Lyne, Longtown for a ram lamb which also received the G.E. Carter Trophy and the Robert Telford Memorial Trophy and later sold at £420 to Mr R. Sunderland, Aspatria. Reserve champion was a ram lamb from Drumrash Farm Partnership which sold at £340 to Greystoke Castle Farms. Other awards were as follows:-

3rd place ram lamb – Mr D. Fleming, Fairfield, Longtown, sold at £320 to Messrs Armstrong, Triermain.

1st place shearling ram – Drumrash Farm Partnership, sold at £400 to Messrs Morris, Westerkirk.

2nd place shearling ram – Mr D. Fleming, Fairfield, sold at £400 to Messrs Robinson, Ottercops.

3rd place shearling ram – W.J. Coltherd, Foulshiels, Yarrow, sold at £480 to Mrs Dodds, Otterburn.

A grand turnout of Suffolk and Continental rams and females saw the ring bursting at the seams.The best quality show of rams forward for years saw all breeds meeting a great trade with vendors returning home very pleased. Top of £560 for a Texel shearling ram from J. Beck, Portospittal, others to £500 and £480 Kirkton, Suffolks to £400 Twislehope and £380 Skelfhill, Beltex £380 Portospittal, Charollais £340 Lesson Hall, North Country Cheviot £250 Hilltop, Bleu d’Maine £160 Orchard, Lleyn £100 Whitcastle. Ram lambs to £550 and £500 for Suffolks from The Lands, Charollais £250 and £240 The Kerr, Texel £260 and £220 Nether Ernambrie. Aged rams to £320 for a Texel from Kirkton others £220 Abbey, Suffolks £150 Hallees, Charollais £260 and £250 The Lands. Females to £140 for a two shear Suffolk from Cleughside with shearlings to £135 Redcat.
