RAM FAIR REPORT

Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. held their Autumn Ram Fair on Tuesday 8th October 2002, when there was 265 Suffolk and Continental Rams and Ram Lambs forward.

The show was very kindly sponsored by Rickerbys Ltd. A very good quality show in each section attracted a full ring of buyers which resulted in a strong selling trade at rates way above most vendors expections.

Suffolk shearling rams topped at £580 from Messrs G. & N. Laing, Twislehope who sold others at £550 and £500, £550 was also attained from Miss Lindsay Laing and Miss Diana Oliver, Middleknowes Hawick. Suffolk ram lambs topped at £580 twice from D. Martindale, Land Farm, Ecclefechan, followed at £550 twice from the same vendor. Texel shearling rams sold to £520, £500 and £480 from Messrs J. Beck, Portospittal. Texel ram lambs to £280 from Messrs Rose, Fingland, Eskdalemuir with 3 shear Texel rams to £320 from the same vendor. Charollais ram lambs sold to £320 from Mrs L.G. Luescher, The Kerr, with Charollais shearling rams to £210 from G. Fleming, Maxton House.

A marvellous entry of 204 Leicester Rams and Females met a brisk trade selling to a top of £1,600 for a shearling from Stockasteads.

Prior to the show some excellent sheep were presented to the judge, Mrs Caroline McGillvery who awarded the overall championship to Miss J. Fleming, Fairfield with a 2002 born lamb. It was a special day for the Fleming family who as well as receiving the Robert Telford Memorial Trophy for the best Ram Lamb and the G. Carter & Son Silver Challenge Trophy for the Champion Leicester, also took the 1st Prize Shearling and 2nd Prize Ram Lamb, not a bad day’s work!

Another highlight saw the sale of rams from Stockasteads which met exceptional competition to a top of £1,600 with others to £1,200 and £1,000.
