The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers’ Mart P.L.C. held
their Principal Autumn Sale of Beef Breeding Cattle on Saturday
11th October 2003 when 347 head were forward, comprising 117 heifers
with calves, 76 cows with calves, 50 cows & heifers in calf,
3 bulls and 101 bulling heifers.
A good quality show was on offer
to a large ring of customers, quality outfits (especially with
bull calves) met a strong selling trade with others meeting a steadier
demand. Bulling heifers met a strong trade for the better sorts.
£
1,350 was top price attained for a tremendous Belgian Blue cross
heifer with Limousin cross bull calf at foot from T. & M. Irving,
Becton Hall, followed at £1,200 and £920 also for Belgian
Blue cross from D. Martindale, Land Farm, who also sold a great
run of Limousin cross heifers with bull calves at £1,150, £1,120, £1,110, £1,050, £1,010, £1,000
(2), £950, £900 (2), and with heifer calves at £980, £820, £800, £720
(2) and £700. Limousin cross heifers with heifer calves sold
to £1,000 from Messrs Elliott, High Dubwath, followed at £800
and £850 Becton Hall. In-calf heifers sold at £670
(2) Windy Hill, £610 (4), £550 (4), £530 (8)
for all Limousin crosses Falside Hill.
The Dispersal Suckler Herd
from Mrs S. Dixon-Thornton attracted very keen bidding and sold
to £800 for a Limousin cow with
bull calf followed at £780 for a Limousin cow with heifer
calf. Bulling heifers topped at £665 (3) and £620 (2)
for Limousin crosses from Becton Hall, £590 (2), £580
(2) Fellend (Story), £580 High Moor Head.
