The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers’ Mart P.L.C.
had forward 6,089 breeding sheep of all classes at their special
sale at Longtown on Tuesday 11th October 2005.
A large show of ewes
attracted buyers from as far as Suffolk, Devon and Wales, all good
quality proved very good to sell.
Lowland sheep sold to £71
for Texel cross gimmers from Bushfield, others to £65 Glencartholm;

Cheviot ewes were
a good show with the majority sold to Welsh buyers. Top
of £54 for North Country gimmers from Newhill, with correct
North Cheviot ewes to £40 Dalemakethar. Hill ewes to £35
Langhope, others to £34 Whitslade and £30 Annelshope;
gimmers to £43 Bellfield; ewe lambs £30 East Deloraine, £29.50
Mowhaugh.
Included in the sale was the dispersal of 600 Hill Cheviots
from Messrs D. Moffat & Son, Bodesbeck, Moffat which created
a lot of interest, with all sheep mostly going to Wales. Gimmers
to £34, 1 crop £33, 2 crop £25, 3 crop £30.
Horned
ewes were a large show again, buyers from the south were present
and trade was excellent for good quality sheep. Top of £41
and £38 for shearlings from Albierigg, others £35 Miltonese;
ewes sold to £32 from Miltonese, others to £30 Skelfhill
and Albierigg; ewe lambs £26 Black Mountain Farms. Correct
Swaledale ewes to £26 Blindburn.
Also included in the sale
was a reduction off 200 Blackface ewes from Messrs Drysdale, Moorhouse,
Berwick. The good flock of sheep were well shown and sold highly
satisfactory. Top of £38
for gimmers, 1 crop £35, 2 crop £33, 3 crop £33.

Hill Cheviots (2,785) were the largest show this Autumn
and with many buyers present trade was the best of the season.
The
show was ably judged by Ian Henderson, Langholm, whose awards were
as follows:-
1st prize – Messrs Warden, Skelfhill, Hawick – sold
at £39.
2nd prize – Messrs Busby, Unthank, Ewes – sold at £37.
3rd prize – D. McGarva, Granton, Moffat – sold at £35.
Other
leading prices were £34.50 Murtholm, £34.20 Carterton
and Glendinning, £34 Commonside, Hartsgarth and Greenside.
Blackfaces
(1,106) were a good show, again ably judged by Ian Henderson whose
awards were as follows:-
1st prize - Messrs Warden, Skelfhill, Hawick – sold at £32.
2nd prize – Messrs Ballantyne, Linhope, Teviothead – sold
at £28.80.
3rd prize – John Tullie, Bowan Hill, Hawick – sold
at £27.50.
Trade was much dearer with other pens to £37.50
