LONGTOWN SHOW & SALE OF CHEVIOT & BLACKFACED STORE LAMBS


The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart had forward 4,808 store lambs of all classes (including 1861 Cheviots and 1,731 Blackfaces) at their special sale at Longtown on Wednesday 14th September, 2005.

At the show and sale of Cheviot and Blackface lambs, judging was in the capable hands of local buyer George Brough, Cleughfoot, Longtown who awarded the following:-

1st prize pen of Hill Cheviots from Langholm Farms, Cooms sold at £33.

Cheviots - 1st Langholm Farms, Cooms selling at £33. 2nd Mrs L Luescher, Glendinning selling at £32.50. 3rd M B & L B Bell, Winterhope selling at £31.50.

Blackfaces – 1st Messrs Robson, Townshield selling at £35. 2nd Mrs Luescher, Sundhope selling at £27.50. 3rd G Telfer, Glenim selling at £27.20.

Other prices were Cheviots £32.20 Eldinhope, £31.20 Effgill, £31 Clenries & Easter Alemoor, £30.50 East Deloraine. Blackfaces £30.20 Lamperts, £27.50 Meikledale, £27 Priestlaw.

In general both Cheviots and Blackfaces would be £3 to £4 per head less on the year, but feeders were keen to purchase.

All other store lambs met a sharper trade on the week and were short of requirements, as more distant buyers were present.

Top was £38 for Texel crosses from Desoglin, others to £36.20 Linhope and Cumstone, £36 Winshields, Suffolks £37 East Foreshield. North Cheviots £37.80 Whitton, £36.20 Meiklewhitriggs. Llleyns £36.50 Windyknowe. Greyfaces £34 Hole of Lyne and Cumstone, £33.80 Byers Hall, Swaledales £24 Whinshields.
