ANNUAL SHOW OF HILL CHEVIOT & NORTH COUNTRY CHEVIOT PRIME HOGGS


The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. held the Annual Show & Sale of Hill Cheviots, on behalf of The Cheviot Society and attracted an entry of 356 on Thursday 17th March, 2005.

A quality show was ably judged by Mr William MacTaggart of MacTaggart Bros., Castle Douglas whose awards were as follows.

Champion pen was a superior pen from Mr M. Cowen, Cleughfoot Farm, Langholm, who also received the Andrew Douglas Trophy for a pen weighing 42 kilos and selling at £53.80 to Woodhead Bros., Colne.

Reserve was a very good pen from Messrs Fleming, Falnash, Teviothead, Hawick, weighing 41 kilos and sold at £54.80 to R.J. Vevers, Canonbie.

Overall the show sheep £52.05 per head and other prize winners were as follows:-

Class 1 (hoggs under 36 kilos)

1st prize – Messrs Bell, Bloch, Langholm, weighing 35 kilos and sold at £43.80 to West Scottish Lamb.

Class 2 (hoggs 36.1 kilo to 41 kilo)

1st prize (and reserve champion) – Messrs Fleming, Falnash, Teviothead.

2nd prize – Messrs Glendinning, Crawsknowe, Canonbie, weighing 36 kilos and sold at £44.80 to West Scottish Lamb.

3rd prize - Messrs Glendinning, Crawsknowe, Canonbie, weighing 38 kilos and sold at £50.20 to West Scottish Lamb.

Class 3 (hoggs over 41 kilos)

1st prize (and champion) – M. Cowen, Cleughfoot.

2nd prize – M. Cowen, Cleughfoot, weighing 44 kilos and sold at £52 to Woodhead Bros.

3rd prize – Messrs Fleming, Falnash, weighing 46 kilos and sold at £53.80 to Woodhead Bros.

The Annual Show and Sale of North Country Cheviot hoggs was also held, and again ably judged by Mr William MacTaggart. Champions were an outstanding pen from Messrs Crichton, Rottington Hall, Whitehaven, weighing 42 kilos and sold to the judge. This pen also received the late Raymond Johnson Ferguson Trophy.

Overall average for show sheep was £55.71 per head and other prize winners were as follows:-

Class 1 (hoggs up to 45 kilos)

1st prize (and champion) – Messrs Crichton, Rottington Hall.

2nd prize – Messrs Crichton, Rottington Hall, weighing 43 kilos and sold at £55.20 to Woodhead Bros.

Class 2 (hoggs over 45 kilos)

1st prize – Messrs Maxwell, Halket Leathes, Castle Douglas, weighing 48 kilos and sold at £55.20 to Woodhead Bros.

2nd prize – Messrs F. Savage & Son, Petteril Green, Calthwaite, weighing 55 kilos and sold at £57.20 to West Scottish Lamb.
