BREEDING SHEEP, STORE HOGGS, CAST EWES & RAMS SALE REPORT

Longtown Auction MartThe Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. held their annual sale of breeding sheep, store hoggs and cast ewes & rams at Longtown on Tuesday 4th January 2005, when there was forward an entry of 6,573, comprising 1,582 breeders, 3,865 hoggs and 1,126 rams and ewes.

The 1,582 breeding sheep attracted a large company of local and distant buyers and trade proved to be very satisfactory throughout. Included in the sale was the dispersal sale of 1,000 breeding sheep on behalf of the late John Scott, Dykehead, Penton, whose sheep were very well presented and sold to a top of £80 for Cheviot Mule ewes (4/6 teeth). Shearlings to £74, £70 and £69 for Cheviot Mules; Lleyn x Cheviot £66; Suffolk cross Mule £66; Greyface £75 and £69. Greyface ewes (4/5 teeth) £72, £71, £69; Greyface ewes (correct) £56, £55, £54; Greyface ewes (correct below) £46. Other breeding sheep to £43 for North Country Cheviot ewes from Maxton House who also sold Lleyns’ at £40; Hill Cheviot £32 Philiphaugh. Hill Cheviot shearlings to £32 Hartsgarth.

The 3,865 store hoggs were a large and quality show and with many buyers present, late extreme high rates were easily maintained. Top of £46.50 for Charollais’ from Low Lonning; Texel £45.80 Lustruther, £44.80 Low Lonning, £43.80 Kirtleton; Cheviot Mule £45.20 Hownam Grange; Suffolk £44.20 Dykecroft, £42.80 Mossbank, £41.50 Wallend; North Country Cheviot £43.80 Hownam Grange, £42 North House; Zwartble £41.80 Bank (Templeton); Greyface £40.50 Mossbank, £40.20 Riggshield; Hill Cheviot £38.20 Cooms, £35 Skelfhill; Swaledale £26 Crowdieknowe. The 1,126 cast rams & ewes forward for the annual sale attracted a large company of distant buyers, trade was very brisk with all classes in demand at more money than recent sales.
