CHRISTMAS PRIMESTOCK REPORT


The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 113 prime cattle, 10 young bulls, 5,163 prime lambs and 4,136 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale on Thursday 9th December, 2004.

A.B. & H. Murray
Champion beast was a Limousin bullock from Messrs A.B. & H. Murray, Sarkside, Kirkpatrick Fleming, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire. In the picture are from left to right Mrs Hazel Murray (Owner), Mr Wick Wilson (sponsor from Jobsons) and Mr Brian Hay (Handler).
123 prime cattle were forward for the Annual Xmas fatstock show, which was again sponsored by Jobsons of Longtown and Nutrivet and judged by Stephen Stoddart, Hillside, Wigton. The overall champion was a Limousin bullock show by A.B. & H. Murray, Sarkside and purchased at 190p per kilo (£1,140) by local butcher W. Kirkup of Longtown. The reserve was a Belgian Blue bullock shown by A.A. Roskell & Partners, Laverhay and purchased by W. Kirkup, Longtown at 155p per kilo (525kg). The Best British steer was won by a Galloway shown by G. & M.P. Forrester, Skitby and also purchased by W. Kirkup at 110.5p (580kg).

Top price prize heifer was a Limousin from J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn, sold at 134.5p to W. Kirkup, Butcher, Longtown. Belgian Blue heifers from D.M. Dickinson, Greenburn sold to 134.5p to S. Stoddart, Hillside, Wigton and to 133.5p from J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn also to S. Stoddart. A limousin bullock from W. & W. Faulder, Houghton House sold to 133.5p and purchased by S. Stoddart. Blonde bullocks from J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn sold to 135.5p (600kilos) to Woodhead Bros, Colne.

Limousin bullocks sold to 190p Sarkside, 133.5p Houghton House, 124.5p Wyseby Hill Cottage, 123.5p, 122.5p, 121.5p, 120.5p, 118.5p (x2), 117.5p Hallburn. Limousin heifers to 134.5p, 124.5p, 122.5p Hallburn, 117.5p South Lamb Hill, 114.5p Nunscleugh; Charolais 128.5p Hallburn, 118.5p, 117.5p Sceughdyke; Belgian Blue 135.5p Greenburn, 134.5p Hallburn; Blonde 113.5p Woodhead.

A small but good show of young bulls sold to a top of 117.5p for a Limousin from D. & L. Graham, South Lamb Hill and 113.5p Hallburn, both to C.M. Kirkpatrick, Carlisle.

Another good entry of 5,163 prime lambs turned out for the Annual Xmas Show & Sale, sponsored by Jobsons, Nutrivet and Solway & Tyne Texel Breeders. 780 show lambs went before the judge, Mr Stephen Stoddart, Wigton, who mad the following awards:-

With 4,136 cast ewes and rams forward, all classes were a similar trade with extra buyers present. Export types remained sharp to sell, peaking at 115.7p for Cheviots from Murtholm, Langholm. Suffolk cross £49.80 Unity Farm; Cheviot Mule £47.80 Murtholm; Charollais £47 Brampton Fell; Hill Cheviot £44 Murtholm; Greyface £43 Low Stokoe; Blackface £40.50 Penpeugh; Swaledale £40 Side Farm; Herdwick £33.50 Carwath.

The 223 lightweight euro lambs met a fast trade, peaking at £36 per head and 112.5p per kilo for Texels from Pennine View; Greyface £35.50 Westerhall; Blackface £33 Catslackburn, £32 Henderland; Herdwick £24 Carwath.

A top quality show of 337 ewes and rams were scarcer and well above recent levels peaking at £59 and £58 for heavy Texel ewes from Oldfield Farm, Thurso. Texel cross £52, £50 Oldfield Farm; North Country Cheivot £50 Oldfield Farm; Charollais £47 Becton Hall; Suffolk cross £38.50 Chalkside; Greyface £37 Becton Hall; Cheviot Mule £34 Chalkside; Gritstone £31.50 Chalkside.
