GREAT ANNUAL RAM FAIR


Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. held their Annual Ram Fair on Tuesday 5th October 2004, when there was 711 rams and females of all classes forward.

The annual show and sale of Bluefaced Leicester Rams & Females saw 221 head forward to a crowded ring of buyers from all parts of Britain. Trade was absolutely a flyer with all classes considerably up on average on the year.

Top priced Leicester shearling ram from Messrs R. & M. Carruthers, Blacksmiths Cottage, Penton, Carlisle, which sold at £2,100 to Messrs W. & A. Forster, The Nook, Penton, Carlisle.

Top of £2,100 for a shearling ram from Messrs R. & M. Carruthers, Blacksmiths Cottage, followed at £1,200 for a two shear ram from W.S. Waugh, The Flatt. Four shear rams peaked at £700 from J.T. James Midtodhills. Ram lambs to a top of £480 Allensgreen.

Judging was in the very capable hands of Mr Lloyd Williams of Anglesey, who awarded the overall championship to a shearling ram from Mrs A.M. Little, The Close, Hethersgill, Carlisle who also received the G.E. Carter & Son Silver Challenge Trophy and sold at £320.

Reserve champion was a ram lamb from Messrs Cruikshank, Drumrash, Parton, Castle Douglas who received the Robert Telford Memorial Trophy and sold at £320.

The full prize list was as follows:-
1st prize ram lamb – Messrs Cruikshank, Drumrash.
2nd prize ram lamb – Miss Judith Fleming, Fairfield, Longtown - sold at £320.
1st prize shearling ram – Mrs A.M. Little, The Close.
2nd prize shearling ram – Borthwick Brae Farms, Roberton, Hawick - sold at £480.

A grand turnout of 158 Suffolks, 18 Lleyns, 20 North Country Cheviots, 4 Zwartbles, 35 Charollais’ 55 Beltex’s and 200 Texel rams.

A busy ringside of buyers were selective in choice with all quality rams easily sold throughout this marathon sale. The sale was topped at £500 for a Texel shearling ram from Messrs Steen, Whitcastle, selling to Messrs Bean, Shield Farm.
