ANNUAL EWE LAMB SALE REPORT

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 5,485 head at their Annual Ewe Lamb Sale on Tuesday 16th September 2003. The entry comprised of 4,250 Greyface Mules, 802 Cheviot Mules and 433 Continental cross ewe lambs.

Mule ewe lambs comprised of a wonderful show, perhaps hardly as strong as last year but turned out in tremendous bloom, a credit to all consignors. Bidding was brisk from the start and with several new purchasers present a sound trade prevailed. With averages up by £7.75 on the year, noticably dearer in particular were smart running type lambs.

Cheviot Mule ewe lambs were a larger show on the year, and with buyers present from a wide area trade was excellent throughout with averages substantially up on the year. Top of £70 for a pen from G. Halliday, Crawthat followed at £69, £67 and £66 for pens from Messrs A. & A.B. Graham, Barnglies who also sold a pen of 51 shearlings at £89 each.

Continental cross ewe lambs met keen bidding with only best quality skinned lambs in demand. Top of £59 (twice) for Texel cross ewe lambs from The Firm of R. Reid, Bengal Farm, closely followed at £58 for two pens from Messrs Carruthers, Peela Hill and £56 Messrs Cartner, Midknock.

Prior to the sale a show sponsored by the Skelton Horticultural & Agricultural Show Society was judged by Mr Alan Ross, Wardhead, Strichen, who after much deliberation awarded the championship to Messrs Carruthers, Peela Hill for their first prize pen ex Blackface, leading the honours out of Swaledales were Messrs J.T. James, Midtodhills, other awards were as follows:-
