CHEVIOT MULE EWE LAMB SALE REPORT

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. held their annual sale of Cheviot Mule breeding sheep at Longtown on Tuesday 26th August 2003, when over 2,500 ewe lambs were forward – a much increased entry on last year.

Top price was £90 for a pen of North Country Cheviot Mules from H. Cockburn & Co., Kingside, Leadburn, purchased by Messrs D.D. McDowall, Newtown. This was followed at £89, paid by Mr Turner, Martin Nest Huddersfield to Messrs Halliday, Crawthat, Lockerbie who sold others at £74 to Mr Longstaff, Dun House, Bishop Auckland. £74 was also paid by Mr Brown, Hilton of Culsh, Aberdeenshire for the top pen from Messrs Crozier, Embley.

An excellent show of Hill Cheviot mules was topped at £70 from Cowburn Farms to J.T. Fleming & Son, Falnash and also from Messrs Common, Crossdykes to Mr P. Murray, Branxholmbraes.

The overall average was £56.60, a rise of £4 on the year.

Prices included Kingside £90, £66, £60; Crawthat £89, £74, £60; Hownam Grange £65, £60; Corriehills £62; Embley £74, £60; Cowburn £70, £61, £60; Carterton £69, £64 (twice); Mid Murthat £62; Crossdykes £70, £66; Terrona £63.

Cheviot mule shearlings were short of requirements selling to £84 from Messrs Common, Crossdykes, closely followed at £70 Marwhirn.
