The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 60 prime cattle, 33 over thirty month cattle, 4,726 prime hoggs and 5,214 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 26th January 2012.

A bigger show of 60 prime cattle saw trade similar on the week, prices peaked at 213.5p for a Limousin bullock from A. Irving, Toppin Castle, purchased by J.A. Jewitt, Quality Meat Wholesalers. Limousin heifers sold to 212.5p and 211.5p also from Toppin Castle. Limousin bullocks sold to a top per head of £1,522.43 from J.F. & I. Armstrong, Nether Onsett.

A good show of 4,726 prime hoggs were forward to an active ring of buyers, with an overall average of 203p per kilo, with export weight hoggs regularly between 205p and 215p and short of requirements, but 45 to 50 kilo lambs harder to sell and over heavys selling well.

Hoggs sold to a top of 280p per kilo for Beltex from Gallowberry. A larger show of 5,214 cast ewes & rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers with all classes £3 to £4 dearer on the week. Blackface, Swaledale and Cheviot ewes were in very strong demand and short of buyers requirements and all classes of rams were keenly sought after.
