The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had a catalogue
entry of 7,849 at their Annual Sale of Border Cheviot Ewe and Horned
Ewes, Shearlings & Ewe Lambs sale at Longtown Mart on Wednesday
29th September 2004.
Another outstanding show of Cheviot ewes at this annual event,
attracted a large company of buyers, especially from Wales, Devon
and Yorkshire, who bid freely throughout the sale. North Country
Cheviots topped at £98 and £88 for Gimmers from West
Nubbock, others £76 The Beck, £74 Milton (Armour).
Ewes sold to £58 from Terreran, £55, £54, and £53
Marwhirn, £50 Gillesbie Farms. Ewe lambs to £45 Lanefoot, £40
Whiteknowe and Meiklewhitriggs.
In general good quality sheep were very easy to sell, whilst secondary
sorts at late rates.
A dispersal of 400 Hill North Cheviots was
forward from Messrs Bindloss & Son, Shap Abbey, Shap, whose
ewes sold very well to £48 and £45 with ewe lambs to £38.
Hill ewes met a great trade at highly satisfactory rates. Top of £54
from Castle Crawford followed at £50 Glengeith, £49
Archbank, £47 Elsdonburn and Woodside, overall average £39.16.
Shearlings to £52 Little Culloch and £45 Closeburn
(Repton).
The Aithie Estates, Glenochar dispersal of 800 created
a lot of interest and this top quality flock met a fast trade with
prices achieved as follows. Gimmers to £48, 1 crop to £53,
2 crop to £48, 3 crop to £46, 4 crop to £46,
5 crop to £33, ewe lambs to £43.
Horned ewes were another useful selection for this annual event
with trade buoyant throughout for best quality. Correct Swaledale
ewes to £52 Low Floweryhirst and £48 Dumblar Rigg.
Shearlings to £58 for pens from Dumblar Rigg, Shankfield
Head, £55 Low Floweryhirst, £50 Fawcettlees.
Correct
Blackface ewes to £46 Chatto Cottage, £45 and £41
Stockasteads. Shearlings to £85 for an outstanding pen from
Wanwood Hill, followed at £72 Dykecrofts. Ewe lambs to £40
Penpeugh.
The part dispersal of 317 Blackface stock ewes from Messrs
W. Wilson & Co., Geltsdale, Castle Carrock met keen bidding
with all ages in strong demand, gimmers to £42, 1 crop ewes
to £40, 2 crop to £38 and 3 crop to £32.
At their Annual Show of North Country Cheviot Rams, 90 head met
a good commercial trade to average £236 for shearlings. Top
price of £450 was paid twice, firstly by Greystoke Castle
Farms to Keith Stones, Nuncote Nook and secondly by Mr Davies,
Adderston Shiels to G. Davies & Partners, North Synton. Messrs
Davies also sold at £420 and Mr Stones at £400. Others
included Gilston £320, Little Chatto £350 and £300,
Allanshaws £320 and £300, Nuncote £350 and £320,
North Synton £350. Top average was £360 from Mr K.
Stones. Judging was in the capable hands of Mr J. Thomson, Hownam
Grange, Hownam.
