Longtown Primestock Sale Report

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 15 prime cattle, 5 young bulls, 13 over thirty month cattle, 4,125 prime lambs and 4,253 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 31st July 2014.

A similar show of prime cattle were forward. Clean cattle were slightly dearer than last week, many more could have been sold to the vendors advantage.

Top price per kilo was a Limousin heifer at 211.5p from A. & W.J. Taylor, Dashwellgreen, followed by 209.5p and 205.5p from the same home. Other leading prices for heifers, 202.5p, 201.5p and 199.5p L.E. Grice & Son, 183.5p Messrs Ferguson.

Bullocks peaked at 203.5p and 202.5p from W. & W. Faulder, Houghton House and 199.5p was achieved for a 700kg bullock from J.F. & I. Armstrong, Nether Onsett, this was also the top price per head at £1,347.50. Other leading prices per head £1,326.68 J.F. & I. Armstrong (Char blk), £1,253, £1,184 A. & W.J. Taylor (Lim heifers), £1,249.30, £1,204.88 L.E. Grice & Son (Lim heifers), £1,215 and £1,129.43 W. & W. Faulder (Lim blks).

Quality OTM cattle maintained recent high rates, peaking at 143.5p for an OTM heifer from J. Wilson & Son, New Farm, Beattock, closely followed by 140.5p for a Limousin cow from Messrs Rutherford, Bleatarn. Other leading price per kilo 128.5p, 125.5p and 119.5p J. Wilson & Son.

A much larger show of 4,125 prime lambs sold to an average of 169p per kilo on par with all other centres this week as many more lambs pour onto the market. Too many lambs in the 37-42 kilo bracket were marketed too lean, just because they are weight does not mean they are fat. Well fleshed lambs were much easier cashed. Lightweight lambs continue to sell at recent high rates. Top of 220p per kilo for Texels from Kirranrae and to £96 per head for Texels from Kirkton.
