Longtown Primestock Sale Report

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 21 prime cattle, 10 young bulls, 32 over thirty month cattle, 5,943 prime hoggs and 3,778 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 20th March 2014.

Clean cattle sold to similar rates and a shortage of real quality on offer. Top of 221.5p for a Limousin heifer from W. & W. Faulder, Houghton House.

Another excellent show for quality of 5,949 prime hoggs (961 lightweights) were forward with many runs of Cheviot and Blackface hoggets. All classes similar on the week apart from heavys which were sharper. Many more hoggs could be sold to advantage but finishers should be aware of hoggs becoming overfat. Light weight hoggs short of buyer requirements.

The overall sale average was 216.8p per kilo (SQQ 220p per kilo). Top was £134 per head for Texels from Messrs Wilson, Wood Farm with a top per kilo of 282p for Texels from Morningside and Newton Cottage.

A similar show of 3,778 cast ewes and rams were forward to a ring of over 20 active buyers resulting in the trade being £8 to £10 dearer on the week for all classes. Tups also very easily sold. Many more ewes could be sold to advantage and are required to fulfil our growing ring of buyers.
