PRIMESTOCK REPORTS


The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 48 prime cattle, 15 young bulls, 33 over thirty month cattle, 21 spring lambs, 4,344 prime hoggs and 3,052 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 18th April 2013.

Some good prime cattle on offer but a shortage of numbers saw a flying trade throughout. The sale was topped at 253.5p, twice, firstly for a Limousin heifer shown by A. & W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen, then for a Limousin bullock from J.C. & D. Nicholson & Son, The Gill, others to 251.5p and 250.5p from M. & G.A. Nicholson, The Lake. British Blue heifers sol to 242.5p shown by J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn.

A smaller show of 4,344 prime hoggs was forward, being a far smaller show on the week but with a far better quality of hogg on offer with more flesh. The sale average was 206.5p per kilo (SQQ 208.4p), a rise of 6p on the week. 124 hoggs were sold as stores, 63 two tooth hoggs forward, 937 lightweight hoggs and 3,257 prime hoggs. The sale was topped at £124.50 per head for Texels from Kilncroft with a top per kilo of 260p for Texels from Keith Mains.

Another light show of 3,052 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers. Trade would be a few pounds back on the week, but heavy ewes still realising well over £100.
