Gimmers, stock ewes and Blackface ewe lambs

Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC held their sale of 1750 gimmers, 380 stock ewes, 1547 Blackface ewe lambs and 558 store lambs at their special sale in Dumfries on Friday 3rd September 2004.

All classes of sheep sold above seller’s expectations to a large ringside of buyers from all over the country.

Top priced Mule Gimmers made £91 from Messrs Pole, Hoseason & Co., Little Culloch, Dalbeattie. The gimmers averaged £78.86, a rise of £7 on the year.

The Blackface ewe lambs met a mixed demand with quality sorts selling well, smaller plainer sorts hard to cash. The top price of £51 was paid for a pen from H Hamilton & Co., Glenmanna, Penpont (Polgowan hirsel). The lambs averaged £36.40 a similar trade to last year.

Store lambs were in demand and many more could have been sold.

Gimmers – Mule -
£91 Little Culloch, £90 Lawesknowe and Marwhirn, £86 Midtown of Balgray, £85 Hoddamtown.
Cheviot Mule - £86 and £84 Marwhirn, £80 Shawhill.
Texel - £78 Nether Keir and Little Culloch, £76 Wardhead, £75 Nether Keir.

Stock ewes – Cross -
£ 66, £65 and £62 Craigbeck.
Charollais - £66 Little Fenwick
Texel - £52 Little Fenwick.

Blackface ewe lambs -
£51 Polgowan, £48 Upper Dalveen, £42 Chanlockfoot, £40 Dalveen, Stroanpatrick, Kirksteads, Dalgonar, £38 Whelphill, Gareland, Carco and Mount Benger.

Store lambs –
Texel - £46 and £42.80 Kilervan, £41.50 Low Tirfergus.
Charollais - £38.80 Low Tirfergus.
Cross - £38 Low Tirfergus.
Blackface - £34.50 Craigdarroch, £30 Low Tirfergus.
Blackface feeding ewes – £22.50 Low Tirfergus

The firm also held their Show and Sale of Suffolk Rams and Ram Lambs. The judge J.F. Allan, Burghmuir, Biggar awarded the championship to I Barbour, Beechgrove, Annan for a ram lamb which sold at £400 to A. Wood,Dumfries. The reserve champion was awarded to D.R. Sloan, Backburn, Annan also for a ram lamb which realised £550.
